Provably Fair Explained: How Crypto Casinos Let You Verify Results

“Provably fair” is a cryptographic method that lets you verify, after a round ends, that the casino did not change the outcome after you placed your bet. It is useful, but it is often oversold. This guide explains the mechanics and the limits.

The ingredients

Most implementations use three inputs (names vary by site):

The game result is derived from these through a keyed hash such as HMAC (often HMAC-SHA256), then converted into a dice roll, card order, crash multiplier and so on. BC.Game describes its originals the same way: results come from a server seed, your client seed and a nonce, the server seed is hashed and shown before the round, and you can check any round after it ends (bc.game).

How to verify a round

  1. Before betting, note the displayed hash of the server seed and set your own client seed.
  2. Play. To check, rotate or reveal the server seed (sites show it after you change seeds).
  3. Hash the revealed server seed yourself and confirm it matches the hash shown earlier.
  4. Recompute the result from server seed + client seed + nonce with the site’s published formula, or use its verifier or an independent calculator, and compare.

If the hash matches and the recomputed result matches, that round was not altered after you committed.

What it does not prove

Where Mint.io fits

Mint.io’s Terms & Conditions (section 9.1) say game outcomes are determined by random number generators, provably fair mechanisms where applicable, or live event results, depending on the product. We have not tested Mint’s verification tools, so we do not claim any specific Mint game is provably fair. Look in each game’s information panel. More in our Mint.io review.

Habits that actually protect you

Provably fair verifies a result; bankroll limits protect your money. Set deposit and loss limits, never chase losses, and treat every game as entertainment with a negative expected return. 18+ only. Help: responsible gambling.

Frequently asked questions

Does provably fair mean I will win more?

No. It only lets you check that a result was not changed after you bet. The game's house edge and your odds are unchanged.

Do all games at a crypto casino use provably fair?

Usually not. Provably fair normally covers the casino's in-house originals. Third-party slots and live tables typically rely on certified random number generators or real-world dealers.

Does Mint.io use provably fair?

Mint's terms say outcomes are determined by RNGs, provably fair mechanisms where applicable, or live event results, depending on the game. We have not verified which Mint games use which method, so check each game's info panel.
