- Volatility
- Rises with mines and picks
- Formula
- payout = 0.99 × C(25,k) ÷ C(25−m,k)

Mines is a 5×5 grid (25 tiles) with a number of hidden mines you choose. Each safe tile you reveal raises the multiplier; hit a mine and you lose the stake. You can cash out any time. 18+ only.
How Mines works
Stake documents that mine positions come from floats derived from your seeds, placed using a Fisher-Yates shuffle so a tile can’t be picked twice (Stake game events). The board is fixed when you place the bet, so revealing tiles doesn’t change where the mines are.
The probability formula
With m mines on 25 tiles, the chance to reveal k safe tiles in a row is:
P(survive k) = C(25 − m, k) / C(25, k)
where C(n, k) is “n choose k”. The fair multiplier (zero edge) is 1 / P. With an example 1% house edge, a payout would be 0.99 / P.
Probability table
| Mines | Picks | Survive chance | Fair multiplier | With 1% edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 96.00% | 1.04× | 1.03× |
| 1 | 10 | 60.00% | 1.67× | 1.65× |
| 3 | 1 | 88.00% | 1.14× | 1.12× |
| 3 | 3 | 66.96% | 1.49× | 1.48× |
| 3 | 5 | 49.57% | 2.02× | 2.00× |
| 5 | 3 | 49.57% | 2.02× | 2.00× |
| 5 | 5 | 29.18% | 3.43× | 3.39× |
| 10 | 3 | 19.78% | 5.05× | 5.00× |
| 10 | 5 | 5.65% | 17.69× | 17.52× |
| 24 | 1 | 4.00% | 25.00× | 24.75× |
To read a casino’s real edge, divide its displayed multiplier by the fair multiplier: e.g. a hypothetical 1.44× shown for 3 mines / 3 picks would mean 1.44 / 1.49 ≈ 0.966, a ~3.4% edge. We do not list casino-specific Mines payouts we haven’t verified.
Verify a Mines board
After rotating your seed, check SHA-256(server seed) against the pre-bet hash, then recompute the floats (Stake uses 3 cursor increments for 24 positions per its implementation page) and replay the shuffle. Our provably fair verifier checks the seed hash; the board shuffle is casino-specific, so use the casino’s own verifier for positions. Background: provably fair explained.
Why “patterns” and systems don’t work
Each board is independent and every cash-out point has the same expected return (payout × survive chance = 1 − edge). Picking corners, raising stakes after a bust, or “safe 1-pick grinding” only changes variance. A sum of negative-EV bets is negative EV. Test bankroll swings with the risk of ruin simulator (e.g. win chance 88%, payout 1.12×).
Change board size and picks in the Mines odds calculator. On a 25-tile board, compare the pick-by-pick tables for 1 mine, 3 mines and 5 mines to see how survival changes with each reveal.
Key takeaways
- P(survive k) = C(25−m, k) / C(25, k).
- Displayed multiplier ÷ fair multiplier reveals the edge.
- Set a stop-loss. Responsible gambling.

Mines removes tiles from a finite board; Plinko instead combines independent turns. Compare those models with the Plinko odds calculator, which separates slot chance from editable payout.
Keno is another finite sampling problem. The Keno odds calculator uses a hypergeometric distribution to count hits on 40-ball or 80-ball boards without replacing drawn balls.
Choosing a Mines exit and a Crash target are different probability problems. The Crash cashout calculator illustrates why a lower fixed target changes win frequency without removing an assumed edge.
Keep the stake plan separate from the board odds: the bankroll and session calculator calculates fixed units and loss limits from money you can afford to lose.
For the payout derivation, read Mines multipliers explained: it works from combinations to gross return and includes every feasible pick count for five mine counts at an example 1% edge.

Frequently asked questions
What are the odds in Mines with 3 mines?
On a 25-tile board the first pick is safe 22/25 = 88% of the time; surviving 5 picks is about 49.6%.
Is there a pattern to where mines are?
No. Mine positions come from the seeds via a shuffle. Previous rounds tell you nothing about the next board.
What multiplier is fair in Mines?
The fair multiplier is 1 / P(survive). Casinos pay less than that; the gap is the house edge. Compare the displayed multiplier with the table here.
