In Plinko a ball drops through rows of pegs and bounces left or right at each row, landing in a bucket with a multiplier. Edge buckets pay big; middle buckets usually pay less than your stake. 18+ only.

How Plinko works

Stake documents that each row is one game event: direction = floor(float × 2) → left or right, with 8 to 16 rows (Stake game events). With n rows and independent 50/50 bounces, the bucket number k (count of right bounces) follows a binomial distribution:

P(bucket k) = C(n, k) / 2ⁿ

Bucket probabilities

8 rows (9 buckets, left to right):

Bucket012345678
Chance0.391%3.125%10.938%21.875%27.344%21.875%10.938%3.125%0.391%

16 rows (17 buckets; symmetric, so the left half is shown):

Bucket0 / 161 / 152 / 143 / 134 / 125 / 116 / 107 / 98
Chance (each)0.0015%0.0244%0.1831%0.8545%2.7771%6.665%12.2192%17.4561%19.6381%

On 16 rows, about 54.6% of balls land in the middle three buckets (7, 8, 9), and an edge bucket is hit about once per 32,768 drops (either side).

Work out the house edge of any payout table

Multipliers differ by casino and risk level, so we don’t publish them. Take the table the game shows you and compute:

RTP = Σ P(bucket k) × multiplier k · house edge = 1 − RTP

Example with a made-up 8-row table [5.6, 2.1, 1.1, 1, 0.5, 1, 1.1, 2.1, 5.6]: RTP = 2×(0.00391×5.6 + 0.03125×2.1 + 0.10938×1.1 + 0.21875×1) + 0.27344×0.5 ≈ 0.9898, i.e. a house edge of about 1.02%. Do the same with the table your game shows.

Verify a Plinko drop

Check SHA-256(server seed) against the pre-bet hash, then recompute one float per row from HMAC_SHA256(server seed, "clientSeed:nonce:cursor") (Stake uses 2 cursor increments for 16 rows: implementation). Our provably fair verifier checks the hash and shows the float method; background in provably fair explained.

Why systems don’t beat negative EV

Each drop is independent. Switching risk levels or rows, or raising stakes after a loss, can’t make RTP exceed the table’s value. High-risk tables concentrate value in very rare buckets, so most sessions lose faster than the edge suggests. Try win chance and payout pairs in the risk of ruin simulator.

For a comparison with sampling without replacement, use the Mines odds calculator and the tables for 10 mines and 24 mines. Their probabilities come from a finite board, rather than Plinko’s binomial bucket model.

The Martingale bust calculator examines a fixed losing-streak limit; it does not improve bucket probabilities or make a negative expected return positive.

Key takeaways

  • Buckets follow C(n, k) / 2ⁿ.
  • House edge = 1 − Σ probability × multiplier of the shown table.
  • Treat it as entertainment with a budget. Responsible gambling.

Independent Plinko turns differ from drawing distinct Keno balls. Compare the Keno odds calculator to see why a binomial shortcut does not describe sampling without replacement.

For contrast with Plinko’s multiple slots, the Crash cashout calculator models only success at a fixed target or a full stake loss. Both need expected return distinguished from short-session results.

Plinko variance does not define what you can afford to spend. The session budget calculator divides a separate affordable-to-lose bankroll into session amounts and stopping limits.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds of hitting the edge bucket in Plinko?

With 16 rows each edge bucket has a 1 in 65,536 chance (about 0.0015%). With 8 rows it is 1 in 256 (about 0.39%).

Does risk level change the house edge?

Risk level changes the payout table, not the ball's path probabilities. The edge is 1 minus the sum of probability × multiplier for that table; compute it with the table the game shows.

Is Plinko provably fair?

On casinos that offer provably fair Plinko, each left/right bounce is derived from your seeds (Stake: one float per row, float × 2 → left or right).
